ORCHESTRA is an Horizon 2020 project with the aim of coordinating and synchronizing the traffic management of all forms of transport.
The long-term vision of ORCHESTRA is a future where it is easy to coordinate and synchronize mobility and logistics for all modes in the face of different requirements and situations.
The problem ORCHESTRA addresses is that traffic caused by transport has many negative effects. Queues, delays, emissions and negative impacts on the environment – and disruptions can have major consequences for efficiency and punctuality. These challenges are difficult to deal with due to a lack of coordination between the different forms of transport.
The ORCHESTRA project will establish a common understanding of multimodal traffic management concepts and solutions, across modes, for different stakeholders and contexts. The project will define a multimodal ecosystem for traffic management, where traffic management in different modes and areas (rural and urban) is coordinated to contribute to a more balanced and robust transport system, which bridges current barriers and silos. The project will offer tools, models and guidelines to facilitate the realization of the future’s multimodal traffic management, also adapted to the connected and automated vehicles and vessels of the future. The aim is to provide European decision-makers, public authorities, transport providers and citizens with new knowledge and technical and organizational solutions to improve cooperation and synchronization of operations within and across modes of transport, increase safety and reduce emissions.
The project requires insight and knowledge from an interdisciplinary perspective – from different transport domains, transport operators, industry and decision-makers, including citizens, local communities and researchers.
Ambition:
The ambition is to design a multimodal ecosystem for traffic management and build and demonstrate technical solutions, organizational aspects, processes and tools. A multimodal ecosystem for traffic management is designed to handle changes in requirements and procedures effectively and assess whether laws, regulations, management and organizational practices are designed for optimal handling of both normal operation and deviations.
Vision:
The long-term vision of ORCHESTRA is a future where it is easy to coordinate and synchronize mobility and logistics for all modes in the face of different requirements and situations. The project will facilitate optimal transport networks and efficient multimodal transport services, both in rural and urban areas, for both people and goods. ORCHESTRA will build a bridge between today’s silos in traffic management to support new multimodal transport services. The project will support stakeholders with tools and best practices to improve collaboration and synchronization of multimodal traffic management.
Demonstrations:
The project’s solutions will be prototyped and evaluated in two Living Labs. Demonstrations include coordinating passengers and cargo across modes in a dynamic, safe and sustainable manner. The user cases will be scaled up through complex scenarios with several actors and handling of irregularities.
- Milan Malpensa Airport will focus on efficient door-to-gate routing according to preferences (fastest, cheapest, etc.) to optimize traffic and passenger flow in Italy.
- Herøya Industripark will focus on full automation by facilitating and coordinating traffic management measures.
Summary – the project will:
- Define a multimodal traffic management ecosystem (MTME), where traffic management in different modes and areas (rural and urban) is coordinated to contribute to a more balanced and robust transport system, bridging current barriers and silos.
- Establish a common understanding of concepts and solutions for multimodal traffic management, across different modes, for different stakeholders and contexts.
- Support MTME realization and deployment by providing tools, models and guidelines – including the integration of connected and automated vehicles and vessels (CAV).
- Validate and adjust MTME for organizational issues, functionality, capacity and usability.
- Maximize the reach and uptake of project results through strong stakeholder involvement.
