There is no international standard for the construction of a Road Data Model that unites users and systems in all aspects of the road sector (maintenance, operations, ITS, designing, and construction). Since 2018, ITS Norway has led the Joint Working Group 11 (JWG11) under ISO to re-develop one of the existing standards, Geographic Data Format (GDF), into a Basic Road Data Model base ISO TC211 GIS family of standards.
As a vital contribution to the JWG11 work, the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) intends to form a Transportation and Mobility Domain Working Group – and they now seek Public Comment on their Charter for the new group. This working group will be instrumental in standardizing a Basic Road Data model under ISO and OGC. A standard that uniquely identifies the geometry and locations of road elements like roadways, lanes, intersections, traffic rules and road markings which will be helpful for many purposes where sharing road maps is needed.
This standard is a scaled-down version of the GDF standard based on ordinary, sharable geographic concepts. The new version of GDF will be helpful for many purposes, such as road maintenance and operations, traffic management, ITS applications and services, and HD Maps.
