The DYNAPORT project recently had an exciting and productive week in Trondheim, where the consortium participated in the MTEC and ICMASS 2024 conference followed by a very educational workshop with the sister project MISSION.

The conference, which took place on 29th–30th of October, brought together a global audience of maritime industry leaders, researchers and industry players. Trondheim, known for its cutting-edge maritime technology environment and testbeds for autonomous ships, was a great setting for the DYNAPORT team to present the project’s preliminary results and share insights on how to advance the Just In Time (JIT) principle for ships. This efficient principle, which aims to reduce waiting times and emissions at port calls, is central to DYNAPORT’s vision.

The week continued with a separate tabletop workshop on 31th of October, which was jointly organised by DYNAPORT and MISSION. The workshop aimed to explore practical measures to implement JIT arrival and optimise port calls. Partners from both projects participated, as well as specially inviting international players such as the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), the Singapore Maritime Institute and the Korea Maritime and Ocean University. With a practical approach, participants were asked to collaborate on analysing a real-life scenario – based on a bulk carrier’s journey from Asia to Europe, identifying both barriers and opportunities for smoother port calls.

Other important discussions during the workshop included terminology, digital transformation and standardization of processes needed for effective JIT implementation. The event concluded with a number of concrete action points to strengthen the collaboration between DYNAPORT, MISSION and other relevant projects, in particular the EU project SEAMLESS.

Together, these projects lay the foundation for a global shift towards more efficient and sustainable maritime transport!
